that Thing is named kunado ikari (岐怒り). he is a manta ray guy and he hangs around enkanomiya. a washed up somebody who just wanders the remains of byakuyakoku

you can imagine them a bit like mai from avatar: the last airbender. he's impassive, kind of rude sarcastic, apathetic, and (mostly) nihilistic. they spend days lying around, napping, in deep thought.. ikari's the kind of guy to fake obnoxious laugh at a bad joke then immediately deadpan to tell you 'that's what would have happened if it was funny'

ikari is somewhat of a keeper of enkanomiya these days (but not really). those who come in and out have this feeling of being watched. but ikari usually doesn't do anything, not even confront them! he never does anything

okay now to get into background. usually i wouldnt put backstory in intro but its all concepts here. plus enkanomiya is a lore heavy place. and EVERYTHING I SAY HERE IS CONCEPT! NOT FINAL YEAH

a Long Long Time Ago there was a Creature floating in the depths of the ocean. Until! it got lost! and became the first floating ray to encounter the recently sunken byakuyakoku. the people were like DUDE! LIGHT 😧😧😧!! and it stuck around to help ward away the vishaps! it stuck around as the people prayed for more light, with the sacrifice of its own health. it got sick

imagine this ray is called something cool and is mentioned in the invame texts and is depicted in murals and stuff. something like the Bathysmal Ray of li NO nevermind thats such a dumb punny name. realistically the people of byakuyakoku probably never saw a floating ray so the name was likely something vague and way more impressive than what it actually was. OKAY JUST IMAGINE! i'm bad with names

when istaroth comes around and grants abrax the knowledge to build the helios, istaroth also blesses (or curses) the ray with health and the power of Human Form! to live amongst the people it cared for. can istaroth do that? i dont know but we're moving on

now imagine the ray is no longer referred to by that silly name and only icarus in ingame texts

icarus is kind of new to stuff. waddling around. naive. theyre not very powerful. when construction of the helios is complete, the people of byakuyakoku begin worshipping it and following the sunchildrens rule. the nobles place icarus as the phaethons caretaker and use him to further manipulate the people. what the heck?

icarus is kconfused by the bs thats happening. they're still new to having Two Feet so all he can do is try follow the people around them. so! icarus lets the lives of all the sunchildren slip through his fingers. at some point it wasnt compliance but fear of being imprisoned or killed by nobles. hm

when orobashi ends the rule of sunchildren and creates watatsumi island, icarus stays behind as everyone else leaves for the surface
